In Ephesians 5, Paul communicates to husbands and wives as to how they are to treat each other.  Husbands are to love their wives in the same way they love and care for their own bodies and wives should respect their husbands.  As Pastor Mike wraps up this sermon series, “Redeeming the Time,” he continues the idea of making the most of every opportunity by walking together in love and respect for one another in marriage.

Redeeming the Time

Ephesians 5

So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, because we are members of His body. FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND SHALL BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH. This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church. Nevertheless, each individual among you also is to love his own wife even as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband.

Ephesians 5:28-33 NASB

How?

     (Reverence)

You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not  be hindered.

1 Peter 3:7 NASB

     (Submit)

In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, as they observe your chaste and respectful behavior.

1 Peter 3:1-2 NASB

when this doesn’t happen?

The Crazy Cycle

“(Without Love) she reacts (without respect)

&

(Without respect) he reacts (without love)”

Steps to Take:

1). (Accept It)

But if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. But those who marry will face many troubles in this life…

1 Corinthians 7:28 NIV

2). (Seek & Give Forgiveness)

Love is patient, love is kind.  It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

1 Corinthians 13:4-5 NIV

3). (Believe in your spouse)

But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world—how he can please his wife…a married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world—how she can please her husband.

1 Corinthians 7:33 & 34b NIV

4). (Learn to Navigate)

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.  Love never fails…

1 Corinthians 13:6-8a NIV
